We’ll spend time outdoors seeing whether there are eggs in our nesting boxes, and visiting with our favorite Farm friends, including our brand-new juvenile alpaca sisters Dahlia and Marigold! Seed huntress and ethnobotanist Sefra Alexandra joins WTF’s own Farmer Ryan Brunelle and milkweed maven Alice Ely, in this one-of-a-kind seedsaving talk, as part of our continuing Pollinator Pathway Series. Learn about Sefra’s quest, with CT NOFA’s Ecotype Project, to find wild native plants and propagate them. 

See how Farmer Ryan saves seeds from his biggest, heartiest produce for next year’s crops, and watch how Alice collects and saves seeds for winter sowing projects.

Learn about ramps, what they are, how they grow, why NOT to over -harvest and how to use them in cooking

1. Event is rain or shine

4. Hiking shoes please; we will be in the woods (barefoot optional)

About your guide: Farah Masani is a visionary farmer has broadened her impact beyond the boundaries of her own land. Born in Bombay, Masani  grew up romping around farms and animals around the world. It is here she got a true farming education. This foundation led to a lifelong passion for growing fresh food with real flavor. Today it is a way of life.

When Farah moved to the States, she attended the University of Texas at Austin and majored in Social Work. Over the course of the next decade, she founded a homeless shelter, educational development centers for children and advocated for the homeless and the hungry.

Growing tired of the lack of fresh, nutrient-rich food with real flavors offered within the food system in this country, she realized it was time to grow her own food.

She is now the Senior Director of Purchasing for Barcelona Wine Bar, based out of Connecticut., and works with producers around the world to supply Barcelona’s 18 restaurants with top quality ingredients. 

Continuing her social justice practice, Masani runs farming therapy programs for children with disabilities.  When Farah is not sourcing, or in the fields, you will find her at the beach or on a mountaintop with her family.

Our popular program is back with a new day/time. Join us for an hour of fun on the Farm with all your furry, feathered and winged friends in a live, interactive experience that takes place outside in the fresh air on the Farm grounds, following all Covid-compliant procedures. Thursdays from 11:30-12:30. $400 per child; $200 per extra sibling. Dates: Sept 24, 25, Oct. 1, Oct. 8, Oct. 15, Oct. 22, Oct. 29, Nov. 5. Limited to 10 children and their caregivers. Julia Halina Hadas is a practicing witch and avid craft cocktail fanatic and bartender. Having worked at a distillery and as a craft cocktail bartender in the San Francisco Bay Area, she combined her love of the craft cocktail movement with her witchcraft practice. While Wakeman Town Farm’s reimagined (and much smaller) Harvest Fest Fundraiser Dinner sold out in minutes, Marcia Selden Catering created an amazing picnic box. If you can't make it to the event in person or just want to show your support this “little Farm that could" , kindly consider purchasing one of the delicious boxed picnic dinners to take home or to the beach and enjoy. Nathalie Fonteyne Gavrilovic is a UConn advanced master gardener and a UConn master composter.  She volunteers in many gardens, including Wakeman Town Farm. 

Mulch is one of the easiest and most beneficial garden practices we can learn.  This presentation will demystify the benefits of mulching, explain the different types of mulch and their benefits and discuss the proper application techniques.

We’re taking our cooking class outdoors! What better way to learn farm-to-table cooking than being on a Farm in the heart of our beautiful gardens.

With lots of space to socially distance, we can safely spread out with individual cooking prep areas while harvesting some of our fall bounty of veggies to whip up delicious culinary creations like fresh baked zucchini loaves, wood-fired pizza, zesty sesame noodles, and fruit galettes to name a few.  And, with our new wood-fired oven, this truly makes outdoor cooking a unique experience for our young chefs.

Whether your young adult has little or no experience in the kitchen, our goal is to create a sense of independence and self-reliance. Learning basic culinary techniques such as reading a recipe, knife skills & mise en place (recipe set-up), are some of the best life skills to help your teen feel confident in the kitchen as they begin to cook for themselves and others. 

Best of all, this outdoor cooking series is guaranteed to be FUN!

Note: Covid precautions in effect,  including temperature taking, hand washing, social distancing and mask wearing.

Jr Farm Apprentice Fall Program - Tues + Thursdays

This outdoor program for kids ages 10-14 allows students to ‘un-plug’ from the digital world, reconnect with nature, and learn the ins and outs of organic farming and gardening through hands-on instruction. Apprentices will work together to help maintain the Wakeman gardens while learning about composting, and taking care of the various farm animals (rabbits, chickens, ducks, goats, alpacas, sheep). Building projects and lessons in sustainable living are also a part of this program, as are service-initiatives. The apprentice model is great for students who like to ‘get their hands dirty’ while learning about the environment and having fun at the same time. Note: Outdoor-Only Program! Dress for cold, rain, etc. Severe inclement weather will cause the camp to cancel for the day or shut down if the program is already in progress. Please call the Parks + Rec Cancellation Line to check 203 341-5074. Required: Please bring nut-free snack, mask, gardening gloves, and individual water bottle every day. Please wear clothes/shoes that can get dirty. All social distancing and safety protocols are in effect.

Each session is $400 for 8 weeks, and meets each Monday or Wednesday from 9-10 a.m. or 10:30-11:30 a.m. Special Wednesday afternoon session is 1:30-2:30 p.m.  Registration includes one parent/caregiver with one child between 0-3 of age. Primarily outdoors, except in inclement weather.
